Pius Health Clinic - A New Village Health Facility Opens in BuMasaaba, Eastern Uganda!

Greetings from Jim & Immy Rose Lassiter in Georgia, USA!

Pius Health Clinic, seen above, began as a request from Immy Rose’s late father, Mr. Lawrence M. Kiondo. Mr. Kiondo, near the end of his life, asked his children to build a health care facility at his rural residence in his homeland BuMasaaba, in eastern Uganda.

Peter M. Kiondo, the heir, and Immy Rose and Jim Lassiter took the lead on this project with the intent of fulfilling Mr. Kiondo’s request and thereby improving the health of all in the small village of Immy Rose’s childhood.

Special thanks to Dr. David Soita and our pharmacist brother Peter M. Kiondo for their medical expertise and all the other continuing support they provide, and to our cousin Deo for overseeing and facilitating all on-site work, including maintenance.

All renovations and new construction were completed at Immy Rose’s direction by local artisans and laborers resident in her home village, Bukiende. Members of the Bukiende community at large are proud of, greatly appreciate, and support their new health clinic.

Pius Health Clinic is a non-profit activity.

Here is some information on Uganda.

Located in East Africa, Uganda is on the Equator. Immy Rose’s homeland, BuMasaaba, is in the far east of the country on the Uganda-Kenya border.

Currently Uganda is home to over 45 million people. There are over forty ethnic groups the largest of which is the Baganda. Immy Rose’s group, the BaMasaaba, comprise slightly less than five percent of the total population.

Uganda, the Pearl of Africa, is unsurpassed in terms of its natural beauty, wildlife diversity, sub-tropical climate, and most important of all, its warm and welcoming people.

Pius Health Clinic is located in one of the most densely populated rural areas of Uganda and Africa where an average of over 1,500 people occupy each square mile.

Here are the major health challenges faced by Ugandans, including the BaMasaaba: neonatal disorders, HIV/AIDS, malaria, lower respiratory infections, tuberculosis, diarrheal diseases, heart disease, congenital defects, stroke, and road injuries.

This is the portion of central BuMasaaba where the clinic is located. It has rolling hills, fertile soils, and fairly consistent rainfall. In the background is Wanale, a prominence at the base of Mt. Elgon, a sprawling mountain hidden here by clouds as it is most of the time.

Here is the road taking us to Pius Clinic. Let’s pay a visit.

The main building is in front, the Inpatient Annex is at the right rear. We call the annex Taj Mandé in honor of our late brother Patrick Mande. To the left of the main building is the latrine with an adjacent bathing room.

Located behind the main building is the clinic’s lab. We have a microscope and minimal supplies.

Here at right is the clinic’s rainwater catchment tank. We hope to dig a well on the clinic grounds in the future.

Pictured here, from the left, is the clinic’s staff Lab Tech/Nurse Assistant Betty Nakirya, Dr. David Soita, and Nurse/Mid-Wife Jalia Namutosi.

Pius Health Clinic opened on December 22, 2020. Vaccinations were given that day.

Here, Dr. Soita attends to a patient.

Here’s a video taken by Peter on opening day.

Here are some of the clinic's minimal equipment & medicines.

Here's a view of the Inpatient Annex and its interior.
